Perlis, also known as
Peghelih by people from northern Malaysia and known by its honorific name
Perlis Indera Kayangan that was given by Tuanku Raja Syed Hussin Jamalullail, whom
ruled Perlis from 1843 to 1873, after the royal town of Indera Kayangan II on
1797 until 1813. Perlis is
the smallest state in Malaysia in terms of both population and land area. It is
situated on Peninsular Malaysia's northwest coast and shares borders with the
Thai provinces of Satun and Songkhla to the north and the Malaysian state of
Kedah to the south. When it was governed by the Siamese, it was given the name
Palit. According to recent data, the population of Perlis was 284,885 as of the
2020 census.
